Malabrigo Mecha - Mini Yarn Review

Posted on December 09, 2014 | O Comments

One of my favourite yarns right now is Malabrigo Mecha, as a chunky knitting yarn it's ideal for knitting last minute gifts as it does knit up quickly.

Knitting with Malabrigo Mecha

Mecha is a single ply yarn spun from pure Merino wool, it is a superwash yarn which takes the dye beautifully giving rich jewel like colours to die for! We currently have 18 colours in stock including firm favourites, Jupiter, Archangel, Solis and Polar Morn as well a unique colours to the Mecha range, Arapey, Tabacos and Lluvias. It has a thick thin appearance and should ideally be knitted on 6-8mm needles to give you a tension of 11-13 stitches per 10cm. A skein is approximately 120m per 100g so you can easily knit a hat from one skein or a cowl from two skeins. Although Mecha is superwash I'd still be inclined to hand wash my finished projects to prolong their life and keep them looking their best.

Malabrigo Mecha 100% Pure Merino Superwash, approximately 120m.130yds per 100g; tension: 11-13 stitches over 10cm on 6-8mm needles. £11.50/skein.

There are some fabulous patterns to download from Ravelry, here are just a few of my current favourites including Sara Gresbach's Moonpath Cowl which I cast on yesterday in the colour Persia, a stunning teal blue and grey mix; this is going to fit in with my winter wardrobe beautifully!

I think that Mecha might be designer Sara Gresbach's favourite yarn too as she uses it in quite a few of her patterns including Comfrey; which is a quick easy cowl that needs just two skeins of Mecha, shown here knitted in colour Arapey.

If you fancy knitting a hat then designer Lisa Woolridge has two patterns using Mecha, both Pioneer Peak and Benson require just a skein each!

If you're looking for a yarn that really stands out in the crowd than I can't recommend Malabrigo Mecha enough, it will certainly add the element of luxury to your holiday gift knitting.
