Pint Sized Knits

Posted on October 23, 2015 by Rachel Owen | O Comments

I'm taking some time off during half term to spend time with my family. I'll also be catching up with my knitting as just recently there has been a mini baby boom amongst my friends and family; I've three girls to knit for!

The plan is to make a start on two wowligan's and an owlet. Both pattern are by designer Kate Davies and they are pint sized versions of her popular adult knits; owligan and owls.

Kate offers a good range of sizes from six months through to ten years in both of these patterns.

I'm going to make both my wowligan cardigan's in the first size which is 6 months. Wowligan is knit from the bottom up in one piece and the cute little owls adorn the yoke and are finished off with buttons for the eyes. I'm going to knit in the recommended yarn, Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino the hard part will be deciding on which colours to choose.

I'm knitting the owlet sweater for the eldest of my three babies, so I'm going to knit the second size for 9 months. Like wowligan, owlet is knit from the bottom up but this time you knit in the round; which is music to my ears as there's no seaming! It also uses one of my favourite techniques, short rows to give this pint sized knit shaping. If you've not used short rows before I can highly recommend German short rows and there's a great tutorial here.

The owlet pattern is broken down into two sizes ranges with the smaller sizes using an aran weight yarn, whilst 3 years upwards are knit in a chunky yarn. For my owlet I'll be using Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran

In both patterns the instructions for knitting the owls on the yoke are charted; I prefer to follow a chart but I know many knitters prefer written instructions and Kate has included these in her later pattern wowligan's.

I'm looking forward to casting on and will update my progress on Instagram.

Happy Knitting
