Freya's Flowers - Zoom Class with Florence Spurling

This 1.5-hour Zoom class with Florence Spurling will cover all the techniques needed to create the decorative flowers that are used on Florence's Freya Tee.

Students will work on a swatch, starting with the base flower stitch that is knitted using a mix of bobble and lace stitches. Once the base flower is created, we will work through the steps of creating the dimensional petal embellishment which will be sewn down onto the swatch.

What is the required skill level?

Advanced beginner/intermediate knitter
Students should have a knowledge of how to knit, purl, cast on and off, yarn over and slip stitch using a crochet hook.

Materials needed but not included with this course:

For the base fabric:

  • Approx. 28 metres/ 30 yards of 4ply/fingering weight yarn
  • 3.25mm / US 3, 40cm / 16” circular needle
  • 2.25mm crochet hook
  • 2 stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

For the petal embellishment:

  • Approx. 5 metres / 5 yards of chunky weight yarn, or double this if using more than one end of a finer yarn
  • 3.25mm crochet hook
  • Lace weight yarn in a fibre/texture that blends with the petal embellishment yarn in the same/similar colour
  • Fine sewing needle with a threading eye large enough for the laceweight yarn used to sew the petals down
  • Piece of firm cardboard (e.g. from a cardboard box), cut into a strip measuring approximately 1.8cm / 0.75” X 19cm / 7.75”
  • Pins to secure the petal embellishments in place as they are sewn down

The original yarn used in the pattern is KOKON Merino Linen for the base swatch and KOKON Chunky Mohair for the petal embellishment.


Using 3.25mm / US 3 needle, cast on 31 stitches. Knit 2 rows in garter stitch and then work the following 12 rows in stocking stitch as follows:
Row 1 (RS): Knit to end
Row 2 (WS): Knit 3 sts, purl to the last 3 stitches, knit 3 sts
Repeat rows 1 and 2, 6 times total.

Florence Spurling is a knitwear designer who specialises in handcrafted and embellished textiles. Florence obtained a Masters in textile design from the Royal College of Art, London, before moving to New York in 2013 to further her design career.

She designs under her brand Florence Spurling Studio with knitted textiles, embroidery, and embellishment.
