There is a yarn that has captured the hearts of knitters everywhere. It's next to the skin soft but super hard-wearing. It has stunning stitch definition but is complex enough to make even the simplest of stockinette sweaters shine, and comes in a selection of colours to satisfy even the most avid of colourwork knitters. I'm talking, of course, about De Rerum Natura's Gilliatt!
Gilliatt is a non-superwash, woollen spun yarn made from a blend of white French Mérinos d'Arles and black Portuguese merino. This blend gives a beautiful depth to both the natural and dyed colourways and creates a lofty, bouncy yarn that you will never want to put down. It is classed as a worsted-weight yarn, but it can work for a range of gauges making it extremely versatile when it comes to picking a pattern. Let's take a look at some of our favourites available right here on the Tangled Yarn website!
De Rerum Natura Gilliatt is the perfect choice for colourwork.
Humulus by Isabell Kraemer
This gorgeous colourwork yoked sweater is worked seamlessly from the top down. The sample in the photo has been knit in Snaeldan Nappað tógv 3tr (3-ply). Gilliatt is great alterative to Nappað tógv 3tr as it too is woolen spun which will make it a lofty fabric that doesn't compromise on warmth. The colour options are vast, but a version in Poivre Blanc and Cypres would be stunning!
One Sweater by The Fibre Co.
As much as we love the latest trends and challenging ourselves to a little complex colourwork, there is always a place in our wardrobes for a perfectly fitting vanilla sweater. The Fibre Co. created the One Sweater to work with their range of DK yarns, but this pattern would work perfectly with Gilliatt too. One in every colour, please!
Douglas Cardi by Andrea Mowry Knit
This grandpa-style cardigan complete with stripes, big pockets, and a relaxed fit is perfect if you want to play around with Gilliatt's colour palette without doing colourwork. A version using the earthy tones of Cedre, Dore, Caramel, Poivre Blanc and Sel would be gorgeous!
Sweet Dreams Blanket by Mrs Moon
Despite being handwash only, Gilliatt is a fantastic yarn to use for baby gifts! It's soft enough for delicate skin but holds up to lots of wear, and lots of washing. This crochet blanket from Mrs Moon is so sweet and would make the most of those gorgeous colourways. Knitters often shy away from non-superwash yarns when it comes to baby knits, but it's not that scary. Just throw it in the sink for a soak and lay it flat to dry, easy!
